However, if you really want to try to do it yourself, you may try using a mixture of molasses or sugar and any fertilizer that contains nitrogen. Make a few holes in the stump with a drill then fill the holes with the above mixture. Then, wet the stump thoroughly and cover it all with a layer of woodchips (mulch).
Some recommend that you add herbicides into the holes, but remember, these would kill the vegetation adjacent to the stump.
